Tris-EDTA buffer (TE buffer), sterilized by 0.1 μm filtration, DNase & RNase free, Protease-free, Pyrogen-free, is a commonly used buffer solution in molecular biology, often used to dissolve, dilute, elute or stably store DNA samples. TE buffer is composed of two reagents: Tris (the most commonly used pH buffer reagent) and EDTA (divalent metal ion chelator). Tris maintains the solution at a weak alkaline state and is protective of DNA bases. EDTA inactivates nucleases by chelating the metal ions required by nucleases, thereby protecting DNA molecules.
